Sando Rotary Equipments | Case Study: Methanol Plant Pump Retrofit
Challenge & Background
A leading methanol production facility originally relied on pumps from alternative international brands. Due to elevated procurement costs, approaching equipment end-of-life, and limited after-sales responsiveness, the plant sought a reliable replacement strategy. Following an introduction through mutual partners, the customer engaged with Sando technical specialists to redesign the methanol transfer scheme. The primary goals: reduce operational expenditure, secure dependable lead times, and obtain local service convenience.

Customer requirements

High concentration methanol transfer — The fluid properties (high purity methanol, pH neutrality but corrosive under agitation, viscosity up to demanding range) required specialized material compatibility and sealed transfer to avoid degradation.
Process duty parameters — Flow rate of 20 m³/h, total dynamic head comprising 10 m vertical lift plus 50 m horizontal run, and suction lift requirement of 3 m horizontal configuration. System efficiency had to be maintained without cavitation.
Corrosivity & safety concerns — Methanol corrosivity escalates with temperature rise; vigorous pumping action could induce heating, altering fluid characteristics and increasing operational risk. The ideal equipment had to minimize shear and temperature elevation.

Sando PUMPS solution approach

Material selection — Stainless steel (SS316) identified as optimal for high concentration methanol, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and compatibility with purity requirements.
Sando electric diaphragm pump — Engineered to deliver maximum head up to 40 meters, max suction lift 6 meters, and flow capacity of 28.8 m³/h. Handles viscosities up to 10,000 cps, exceeding field conditions.
Low shear technology — Gentle pumping action reduces mechanical impact on methanol, preventing localized overheating and preserving chemical stability, thereby mitigating safety hazards.

Field implementation & results

After collaborative engineering validation, Sando technical staff deployed a Sando EODD unit at the customer’s methanol plant for an extensive trial period. The installation included verification of suction line configuration, flow regulation, and continuous monitoring of discharge parameters. The electric diaphragm pump demonstrated stable performance at the target 20 m³/h flow rate while maintaining discharge head conditions well within the required 10 m vertical + 50 m horizontal duty cycle.

Key operational advantages observed: minimal temperature rise across the pump housing, consistent methanol quality without degradation, and significantly reduced mechanical stress on the fluid. The low-shear characteristic effectively eliminated overheating risks associated with previous pump technologies. Maintenance intervals proved simplified thanks to the modular diaphragm design and local service support.

Customer satisfaction & economic impact: Following successful trial operations, the facility proceeded with large-scale replacement of imported pump units with Sando EODD stainless steel models. The transition delivered substantial cost reduction in both initial procurement and lifecycle maintenance, while enhancing supply chain responsiveness. The plant reported improved process reliability and a notable decrease in unplanned downtime, reinforcing the value of optimized pump selection for critical methanol transfer.

Service advantage: With Sando Rotary Equipments as channel partner, localized after-sales support and rapid spare parts availability ensured seamless integration.
Outcome: 100% methanol transfer reliability | lower total cost of ownership | enhanced safety profile.
